Why I Love Writing, Why I Write, and Everything in Between

- Isaiah Ramseur
“A writer, I think, is someone who pays attention to the world.”
-Susan Sontag
So, I know I’m still young and I don’t know a bunch about writing, but that’s one of the reasons I enjoy writing. When you’re young your mind is constantly flourishing with new ideas. You become excited at the thought of learning new words. When I was just about seven I started writing. I came up with the idea of writing about an astronaut. I didn’t know much about writing, but I knew that I loved it and wanted to do it.
There are infinite possibilities. That’s one of the things that I love about writing. Writing is being able to create a whole new world. When you write you get to create a world where you make the rules and architect your own playing field; a place where you know what happens to everyone.
Writing is a form of art. When I was younger my teachers would say, “For those of you who are artistically inclined...” I didn’t understand what they meant until I started writing.
Writing is the one thing I can actually do. That’s also something I like. Writing makes me feel special. It lets me know that I can be artistic without drawing.
I find movies are a fantastic outlet for writing - clashing with art and creating a whole new realm of creativity. I am inspired by movies. I enjoy the way the characters work together and sometimes fall apart. I feel that sometimes movies can be a really accurate representation of real life. Take the movie Inside Out. It just goes to show that people have much more going on in their heads than we realize. Sometimes people choose not to control themselves and they become angry or sad or afraid. Sometimes I do the same thing. Sometimes I get angry or I get disgusted just because I haven’t chosen to control my feelings.
Another thing that I like about writing is the challenge. Writing a book has lots of challenges. Writer’s block is one that I find most common. Sometimes I can’t think of what’s going to happen next so I take a break for a little bit. One of the most difficult challenges for me is making my characters talk like the age they are. I’ve built up such a vast vocabulary that I sometimes forget to make my characters talk like they’re young and not 75 years old. I sometimes forget to talk like a kid. Sometimes I speak as if I’ve taken advanced ELA classes.
My siblings often inspire me. My parents are also really encouraging. My dad says that he thinks it’s great that I’m so young and I choose to write. My mom says that she loves how creative I’ve become. My siblings have influenced me a lot. They’ve encouraged me by saying they want to read my book. My youngest brother, Titus, reads it the most. He always looks like he’s having so much fun reading my book.
When I write I hope to transport my readers to the world of fantasy. Monsters and magic. Abilities and treasures. I hope my readers fantasize about writing their own book. That is my favorite thing about writing. I love to inspire.
